It is believed to be a caretaker's cottage at a former school site in a Norfolk market town.

And now the two-storey building could gain a new lease of life after plans were submitted to have its use changed to housing. 

The building is part of Fakenham College's abandoned sixth form site. 

The site off Wells Road was closed in 2017 after Fakenham College merged with Fakenham Academy down the road at Field Lane, leaving the former site vacant.

The Wells Road site is situated north of the town centre and the Georgian building has been unused since the academy decided to merge its two sites seven years ago. 

Earlier this year, M & D Developments purchased the site after it was put on the market.

The developer plans to convert selected parts of the former school site into accommodation and redevelop the northern section for new build housing.

Andrew Kellock, the architect acting on behalf of the developers, said in the application: "The small detached building set on the western boundary of the site along Field Lane would not have significance in the general redevelopment.

"Therefore the applicants are considering the option of selling off this unit prior to consolidating the general scheme."

He said in the application to North Norfolk District Council: "The proposal is to market the premise for residential use.

"No alterations to the building are proposed and any such works would require separate permissions by a new owner."

Mr Kellock said the "scale, form and location beside a secondary access clearly suggest a past use as a school caretaker's house.

"Various other educational uses may well also have been utilised throughout its life.

"The building is sound, in reasonable condition and could be easily adapted to a small house without significant alteration."

The land sold with it would also include the wooded area of the front grounds running along Field Lane. 

A decision is expected by October 4.
