A brewer has been recognised in the Unsung Hero award in The Norfolk Rural Business Awards for his charity work.

David Holliday, co-founder of Moon Gazer Ale in Hindringham, fundraises for cancer charity It's on the Ball.

Established by the Norfolk County Council and the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association, the awards highlight the best of Norfolk.

Mr Holliday was applauded in the Unsung Hero of Norfolk category, which acknowledges individuals who have gone the extra mile.

He said: “The real heroes of this award are Vince and the team at It's on the Ball who work tirelessly to stop young men needlessly dying of this cancer, and also support those receiving treatment.”

During the last six years, his brewery has raised £43,000 for It's on the Ball.

The funds raised will help increase awareness of testicular cancer and to prevent young Norfolk men's needless deaths.

The charity's approach is simple: promote conversation among pub friends.

Early diagnosis raises survival chances by 96pc, so time is of the essence with this life-threatening disease.

In support of the charity, Mr Holliday embarked on two major physical challenges in the form of a Beer Barrel Push in 2022 and 2023.

He pushed a barrel and trolley over long distances, even completing the equivalent of seven marathons in a week.

He said: “The beer push really did capture the imagination, and the sight of me pushing a bright blue barrel across Norfolk made people stop and talk and we made sure so many young men knew how to check themselves for this cancer and the importance of a monthly check.

“The award means a great deal to us – we love what we do but to know others appreciate is a great honour but also helps spread the word as well.”

Mr Holliday is channelling his award-winning energy towards Beer Push 2025, aiming to cover 340km, equivalent to seven ultra marathons in a week.
